Definition
The formula approach of 3P is 12 boxes in the original with a single loop; the loop is for the next function rather than for the rest of the function.
In detail
The Process 3P Loop is a structured method for concept design within Production Preparation Process (3P). It divides the design process into twelve steps and performs one loop-back upon completion, but the purpose of the loop-back is to switch to the next functional module, not to repeat the current function. In the system, it ensures every function is systematically considered, avoiding omissions or over-optimization. Unlike the overall 3P process, it focuses more on pacing the generation and screening of concepts. Outputs are typically a screened set of feasible concepts and follow-up Action Plans.
Example in practice
When laying out a new product line, the team used the Process 3P Loop to analyze functions such as machining, assembly, and inspection in sequence. For each function, after completing seven options, they screened down to three, then selected one, and moved on to the next function. In this way, the team completed concept design for all key functions within two days and clarified the implementation owner for each function.
