TRA

Definition

Standardized evaluation of assessment of technical maturity.

In detail

Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) is a standardized review method for systematically assessing the maturity of a technology. It reviews level by level from principle validation to practical application against the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale, identifying technical risks and gaps. In the system, TRA typically serves as a gate before project milestones or investment decisions, ensuring the technology reaches expected maturity before proceeding to the next phase. The difference from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is that TRL is a measurement standard, while TRA is the process of applying that standard for review. The output of TRA is typically an assessment report containing the current TRL level, gap analysis, and recommended next actions.

Example in practice

An R&D team planned to use a laboratory prototype technology for new product development. Before investing significant resources, management organized a TRA review, inviting technical experts, engineering, and project management personnel to evaluate against the TRL scale item by item. The review found that the technology's reliability in real environments had not been verified, with TRL only at level 4. The team adjusted the development plan, added an environmental testing phase, and clarified the conditions needed to reach TRL 6. Ultimately, the review report provided a basis for project decisions, avoiding risks from premature production.
