Vertical Teams

← All terms

Definition

Teams that are best suited to meet problems or challenges, regardless of level and position.

In detail

A vertical team is a temporary problem-solving group formed by the most suitable people, breaking down hierarchy and job boundaries. It addresses the issues of slow response and dispersed responsibility in traditional functional organizations, ensuring clear ownership and rapid decision-making for cross-functional problems. Unlike daily functional teams, vertical teams focus on specific challenges and disband after task completion. They typically output problem solutions, action plans, or improvement results, which may be codified into standardized processes.

Example in practice

When a complex quality issue arises on a production line, the factory assembles a vertical team of cross-functional members from process, equipment, quality, and operators, authorizing them to analyze root causes and implement countermeasures within a week. The team is not bound by daily reporting and reports directly to the plant manager. Through floor observation and data analysis, the team identifies equipment parameter deviations and adjusts them. After the problem is resolved, the team disbands, and lessons learned are incorporated into standard work.
