Work Sequence

← All terms

Definition

The operator executes the process manual steps in a specific order.

In detail

Job sequence is the specific order in which an operator performs manual steps in a process, and is one of the core elements of standard work. It defines the sequence of actions for each step of the operator, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and consistently. Unlike a route sheet, job sequence focuses on human actions rather than material flow. It is typically presented in chart form and serves as the basis for training and improvement.

Example in practice

On an assembly line, engineers use time observation to determine the optimal work sequence, such as assembling part A before part B to reduce turning and waiting. After standardizing the sequence, they train new employees and post it at the workstation. When demand changes, the sequence is re-evaluated to optimize balance.
