Definition

A material management process that determines the most effective replenishment method for each material and achieves the best balance among inventory/cost/complexity/customer delivery.

In detail

DMP (Danaher Material Management Program) is a systematic method for selecting the most effective replenishment method for each material, aiming to find the optimal balance among inventory, cost, complexity, and customer delivery. It addresses material flow from suppliers to production lines, using pull, kanban, and leveling to replace traditional push production, reducing overproduction and inventory buildup. Compared to kanban systems, DMP is more macro, covering the entire material flow system, including replenishment strategies, inventory management, and supplier collaboration. Outputs typically include material flow strategies, kanban quantity calculations, replenishment processes, and inventory management plans.

Example in practice

When a factory faces issues of high inventory, frequent shortages, or untimely delivery, a DMP project can be initiated. For example, an electronics manufacturer finds that its raw material inventory turnover is slow, but key materials are often out of stock. By implementing DMP, the team analyzes the consumption patterns of each material, determines appropriate replenishment methods (such as kanban or periodic replenishment), and designs a pull system. Ultimately, material flow becomes smooth, inventory levels are optimized, shortages decrease, and delivery performance improves.
