Definition
Standardized template and method for annual planning of functional departments: a three-part structure of overall departmental planning, PD and KPI alignment, and key priorities, including a 2019–2021 multi-year roadmap. The template comes from Bull Group's departmental planning courseware and is not a Danaher item.
In detail
The Functional Department Planning Template is a standardized annual planning tool that helps functional departments (such as HR, Finance, and IT) translate corporate strategy into specific Action Plans for their departments. It addresses the disconnect between strategy and execution, ensuring each department's objectives align with the company's overall direction and clarifying resource allocation, timelines, and owners. Unlike the Strategic Plan, functional planning is more focused within the department, and the output is usually a departmental annual plan containing objectives, key initiatives, budget, and performance metrics.
Example in practice
At the end of each year, after the company sets its strategic objectives for the following year, each department must develop its own plan accordingly. For example, HR uses the Functional Department Planning Template to translate the company's strategic objective of "improving employee capability" into specific training plans, hiring plans, and performance management improvement initiatives. Through the template's standardized structure, department heads can clearly present objectives, actions, resources, and measurement criteria, ensuring alignment with company strategy and facilitating senior management review and resource coordination.
