Definition
Long-term direction planning based on a careful assessment of the most important directions of the organization.
In detail
Vision is a long-term direction plan formulated based on careful assessment of the organization's most important direction, answering "what we want to become." It provides long-term guidance within the strategy system, aligning short-term decisions with long-term goals. Unlike mission (why we exist) and strategy (how we compete), Vision focuses more on Future State and aspiration. It typically outputs a concise vision statement and serves as the basis for Strategic Plan and functional planning.
Example in practice
When a company develops a three-year strategic plan, the senior team uses workshops to examine market trends and internal capabilities, clarifying a five-year vision, such as 'becoming the customer's preferred intelligent solution provider.' Subsequently, each functional department develops functional plans aligned with the vision, ensuring all projects are consistent with it. The vision statement is posted in the office area to guide daily decisions.
