Definition

SPG Process first step: a brief description of the strategic portfolio gaps, and the benefits/constraints to bridge the gaps, and the strategic basis for initial alignment of teams.

In detail

Gap Vignette (gV) is the first step of the Strategy Partner Grow (SPG, an Open Innovation tool) process and the first page of the SPG workbook. It serves to advance to the SPG TG1 and Want Brief Workshop, using brief text to describe the strategic portfolio gap, the benefits and constraints of closing the gap, and the strategic rationale, for initial team alignment. It addresses how to quickly build consensus and clarify direction in complex strategic problems. Compared with a full gap analysis, the Gap Vignette is more concise and emphasizes key elements. It typically outputs a one-page gap description as the basis for subsequent discussion.

Example in practice

Before seeking external partners or technology, the team first writes a Gap Vignette: a business unit discovers it has a capability gap in a certain technology; the Gap Vignette describes this gap, the benefits and constraints of closing it, and the strategic rationale. The team aligns direction accordingly, enters SPG TG1 review, and then launches a Want Brief Workshop to find external partners.
