Lean Conversion Fundamentals

Also called: Lean Foundation

Definition

The basic course for the Leaning is centred on value flow mapping (VSM) - a picture showing material flows and information flows simultaneously to recognize waste.

In detail

Lean Conversion Fundamentals is the introductory course in lean management, centered on Value Stream Mapping (VSM): by mapping material flow and information flow, it identifies Muda and plans Kaizen. It addresses the problem of lacking an overall understanding of lean and having fragmented Kaizen activities. Unlike Lean Leadership, Lean Fundamentals focuses more on tools and methods than on leadership behavior. Its outputs are typically a Current State Map, a Future State Map, and a Value Stream Plan, providing a roadmap for subsequent Kaizen activities.

Example in practice

When a company first introduces lean and needs the team to understand waste and improvement directions, lean fundamentals training can be conducted. For example, a machining factory organizes the core team to learn VSM, drawing a value stream map from raw materials to finished products, and identifies severe waiting and inventory waste. Based on the future state map, they develop an improvement plan, including implementing a pull system and reducing changeover time. After training, the team shares a common language, and improvement activities become more targeted.
