Also called: Process-at-a-glance

Definition

A flow-charting method used in SDR and 3P to optimize manufacturability, presenting value-added steps, materials, tools, mistake-proofing, and safety points step by step with iterative refinement; it ensures operators have every resource at each step. The 3P/SDR version is a 9-row chart drawn right to left, matching the operator's right-to-left walking path (paired with the cell's counterclockwise flow); the Flow course version is an 8-row chart drawn backward from the finished product.

In detail

Process at a Glance (PaaG) is a right-to-left flow-charting method used in SDR (Speed Design Review) and 3P (Production Preparation Process) to optimize manufacturability. It progressively presents value-added steps, materials, tools, mistake-proofing, and safety points, and iteratively refines them, ensuring that operators have all resources (not just information) at each step to guarantee cycle time and quality. Unlike value stream mapping (which focuses on overall flow), PaaG focuses on the resource completeness of individual operation steps. The 3P/SDR version outputs a nine-row chart drawn right to left to match the operator's walking path (paired with the cell's counterclockwise flow); the Flow course version is an eight-row chart drawn backward from the finished product, kept in the improvement room for communication.

Example in practice

During the 3P design phase of a new production line, engineers draw PaaG right to left to match the operator's walking path within the cell, planning each assembly step in order. For each step, they list the required materials, tools, mistake-proofing devices, and safety points, and conduct on-site simulation verification. Through iteration, they discover that a specific fixture is missing for one step and promptly add it. Ultimately, PaaG becomes the basis for operator training and daily management, helping the new line ramp up quickly and stably.
