Definition

A visual tool to support "possession of the required technology at the right time" discusses and decides on how to break down the relationship between market demand, product attributes and technology on the timeline.

In detail

A Technology Roadmap is a visual tool that links market segment needs, product attributes, and technology development on a timeline, answering the question "do we have the required technology at the right time." It helps management see the alignment between technology investments and market opportunities in discussions, avoiding disconnects between technology development and product planning. Unlike Product Lifecycle Management (PLCM), which focuses on the overall management of a product from introduction to retirement, the technology roadmap focuses on the evolution and deployment timing of the technology itself. It typically outputs a chart containing a timeline, market layer, product layer, and technology layer, along with key technology lists and investment priorities supporting decisions.

Example in practice

A consumer electronics company planned to launch a new generation of smart wearable devices within three years, but the R&D department disagreed on which technologies needed early development and which could be outsourced. During a technical review meeting, management used a technology roadmap to map functional requirements of the target market (e.g., longer battery life, smaller size) to corresponding battery, chip, and sensor technologies, and noted each technology's maturity and expected availability. After the meeting, the team identified two key technologies requiring internal development and three mature technologies that could be introduced through partnerships, and adjusted the annual R&D budget and hiring plan accordingly.
