Definition

Elimination of waste, process-to-flow process vision.

In detail

Future state is the process vision after eliminating waste and linking processes with continuous flow, typically presented as a future state value stream map. Based on current state analysis, it designs the ideal process, including pull systems, Takt Time, standard work, and other elements. Compared to the current state map, the future state map shows the improvement direction and serves as the basis for the value stream plan. It helps teams focus on goals and guides the prioritization of improvement activities. Its output is a future state map and an accompanying value stream plan.

Example in practice

During the value stream improvement week, the team mapped the current state and found significant inventory and waiting. Through discussion, they designed a future state: merging processes, introducing supermarkets and kanban to enable smoother material flow. The future state map became the blueprint for subsequent improvement activities, guiding the team in step-by-step implementation.
