Also called: Analysis of the current situation

Definition

Analysis and description of the actual state of the current production/office environment.

In detail

Current State Analysis is a systematic description of the actual conditions of the current production or office environment, including processes, performance, and waste. It is the starting point for improvement activities, providing factual evidence for setting goals and identifying gaps. Unlike a future state map, current state analysis focuses on "what is now," not "what should be"; compared to problem statements, it is more comprehensive, covering the entire process. Typical outputs include current state flow charts, data collection sheets, and waste lists.

Example in practice

Before the improvement week, the team mapped the current state of the order processing flow through on-site observation and interviews, recording the time and waiting time for each step. They found that the approval step consumed significant time, becoming a bottleneck. Based on this, the team set a goal to shorten the approval cycle, providing direction for subsequent improvement.
