Three-Second Rule

← All terms

Definition

Looking at a viewed area, you can understand what's going on there in three seconds.

In detail

The 3-Second Rule is a visual management standard requiring observers to understand the state of a work area within three seconds. It addresses information transfer efficiency, ensuring abnormalities are quickly identified. Unlike the Sort and Set in Order steps of 5S, it focuses on information readability rather than item placement. Outputs typically include visual improvement checklists, such as signage, color coding, and kanban boards.

Example in practice

During a workshop renovation, managers find that new employees need one minute to find tools. Applying the 3-second rule, the team redesigns tool cabinet labels and color zones so that anyone can locate needed items within three seconds. After the renovation, new employee training time is shortened, and tool search time is significantly reduced.
