VPAS

Definition

Understanding processes where clients see value issues in a market that you see value-along, focusing on issues in the client ' s ecosystem rather than on its own product defects.

In detail

Valuable Problem in an Attractive Segment (VPAS) is a process to understand problems that customers find valuable within selected attractive market segments. It focuses on problems in the customer ecosystem, not on one's own product defects, helping to discover innovation opportunities. VPAS differs from Voice of Customer (VOC) in that it emphasizes problem importance rather than needs. Outputs of VPAS typically include a problem list, prioritization, and potential solution directions.

Example in practice

A medical device company wants to enter a new market segment. They use the VPAS process, interviewing doctors and patients in that segment to understand their key problems. The team finds that existing devices lack portability, which is the customers' top concern. Based on this, the company develops a portable device and successfully enters the market. VPAS helps the company start from customer problems, not from its own products.
