Definition
Indicators of frequency of security incidents.
In detail
Incident Rate is a metric measuring the frequency of safety incidents. Formula: recordable incidents × 200,000 ÷ wage hours (200,000 = 100 hours worked by one full-time employee per year), not per million hours. It reflects workplace safety conditions and is a core KPI of the safety dimension in Daily Management. Unlike severity rate, Incident Rate focuses on frequency and is used for trend monitoring and Kaizen effect evaluation. Output is a monthly or annual Incident Rate value for safety performance comparison.
Example in practice
A factory tracked accident rates monthly and found a continuous increase for three months. Management initiated a safety improvement week, analyzed root causes, and implemented mistake-proofing measures. Three months later, the accident rate decreased, validating the improvement. The accident rate, as a safety KPI, helped the factory identify problems promptly and track improvements.
