Definition
MBS value stream manual adds a step between current state map and future state map: ask fourteen questions in fixed order, each question lands a numbered improvement opportunity, then select tools per mapping table (DOI greater than takt → standard work, low OEE → TPM, high changeover → SMED, high defect rate → 5WHY/PSP, high WIP → 5S). Not a DBS standard.
In detail
The order of the fourteen questions itself carries logic: 1–2 define the pull start point (point N), 3–5 define continuous flow, 6–9 define pull and kanban, 10 defines inventory, and 11–14 define changeover, OEE, quality, and other losses. Once the ten data fields in the process box are filled, half of the questions can have candidate answers automatically generated from the data; the mapping only prompts, does not block, and the same opportunity can point to two tools, with the improvement week team leader determining the primary and secondary.
Example in practice
Company A current state map: spot welding effective cycle time 60.3 seconds equals takt time, assembly 49.5 seconds has margin, DOI 41 and 40 are similar—questions 3 and 4 point to "combine spot welding and assembly into continuous flow + standard work and TPM for spot welding", question 11 points to quick changeover between stamping and spot welding.
