Definition

The Danaher process is a standard process for resolving problems: defining problems, going to the field to dig deep roots, validating and implementing countermeasures, and ensuring that results are sustained.

In detail

The Problem Solving Process is Danaher's standard process for solving problems: define the problem, go to Gemba to dig deep into the root cause, verify and implement countermeasures, and ensure results are sustained. It solves the problem of issues recurring and treating symptoms rather than causes. Danaher officially defines PSP as the four DIVE steps (define the problem, investigate the root cause, verify and implement countermeasures, ensure results are sustained); the "9-step method" comes from a third-party rearrangement (textbook 23, header belleintl.com) and is a finer breakdown of the four steps, not Danaher's official number of steps. Typical outputs include problem-solving reports, root cause analyses, and countermeasure implementation plans.

Example in practice

A production line frequently experienced equipment downtime, affecting delivery. The team used PSP, first defined the problem, then observed on-site, and through 5 Why analysis found the root cause was insufficient lubrication. They formulated countermeasures: improved the lubrication Standard Work and trained employees. After implementation, they tracked for one month, downtime significantly decreased, and it was incorporated into daily management for sustainability.
