Responsibility Assignment Matrix

RACI

Also called: RACI Matrix · Responsibility Matrix · RACI

Definition

A responsibility assignment table marked R/A/C/I by deliverable × role; each row can have only one A. Non-DBS curriculum content; it is common practice in project management.

In detail

The Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RACI) maps each deliverable or activity to roles, using four letters to clarify who executes (R), who is ultimately accountable (A), who must be consulted beforehand (C), and who must be informed afterward (I). It solves the problem of "everyone manages, no one owns." The hardest rule is that each row has exactly one A; the system also requires at least one R per row. This is not a DBS textbook tool — in the course pack, the project management family only includes the communication matrix; RACI is a common project management practice (see the PMI PMBOK Guide, Resource Management chapter).

Example in practice

A nine-month consulting project has four workstreams, two deliverables, and one data access permission table. In the "RACI Matrix" on the project assessment page, the team fills in eight rows according to the charter: the project team is R for all analyses, the sponsor is A for the charter and final blueprint, and the client project manager is R for data and site access. The system immediately points out that the rows for the four workstreams have no A—the charter indeed leaves them blank, which is exactly the question to ask the sponsor during review.
