In detail
Black Belt is a certification for leading improvement projects in the Six Sigma methodology, indicating that the holder possesses advanced statistical and project management capabilities. It addresses the issue of who leads complex problems and how to ensure improvement quality. "Green Belt" is an industry-wide Six Sigma tiering term; Danaher's own Black Belt certification instead follows a four-step path that starts with earning kaizen-week team-lead status within VRK, rather than being defined by contrast with another internal tier. The certification process is rigorous, and the output is validated improvement results and experts capable of coaching others.
Example in practice
When a company encounters a long-standing quality issue, such as a high defect rate with unknown causes, a Black Belt can be assigned to lead. Following the PF/CE/CNX/SOP seven-step roadmap, the Black Belt leads the team through process flow mapping, cause-and-effect analysis, and variable classification, turning the findings into standard work to find root causes and implement improvements. Through the Black Belt's systematic approach, the problem is resolved, and the team's problem-solving skills are developed.
