Definition

The problem-solving tool for the diagram of processes compares "status" with "due" processes and makes waste visible.

In detail

A flowchart is a tool that uses graphical symbols to represent process steps, decision points, and sequence, used to visualize the current or ideal process. It helps teams understand the overall process and identify waste, bottlenecks, and unnecessary steps. Unlike value stream mapping, flowcharts are more detailed, including decision loops, and are suitable for specific process improvements. In problem solving, flowcharts are often used to document the current process, providing a basis for analysis. The output is typically a clear flowchart that serves as a reference for team communication and improvement.

Example in practice

When optimizing the order processing flow, the team mapped the current process and found multiple approval steps causing delays. By comparing with the "should-be" process, they eliminated an unnecessary signature step and adopted electronic approval, reducing processing time. The process map made issues visible and facilitated cross-departmental consensus.
