Model Value Stream

Also called: Model Value Stream · Demonstration Value Stream

Definition

A value stream selected at the initial stage of rollout and given concentrated resources to be thoroughly improved first, used to prove the method works and develop the first batch of people, after which the practice is replicated to the second; when selecting, look first at the quality of the leader, then at business weight. From a publicly published work, not textbook measurement definition.

In detail

A model value stream is not about choosing the messiest, hardest one to tackle the toughest problem, but about choosing the one with the strongest leader, the most painful problems, and the most complete data, ensuring the first batch of results is visible. Its difference from a model cell lies in scope: a cell is a model for one work unit, while a value stream is an end-to-end model from order intake to delivery. A common mistake is treating "model-level application" as "full application," declaring completion once one line is done while other value streams remain unchanged.

Example in practice

An assembly plant has three product lines and selects the one whose leader has the most drive and which has the most customer complaints as the model value stream. The first half-year of Kaizen weeks is concentrated on this line; after delivery and first-pass yield improve, the second value stream directly copies the management board, daily meeting, and changeover standards, and its first 90 days are more than a month faster than the first.
