Multi-Skilled Worker

← All terms

Definition

Skills and training of diverse staff at all levels, providing flexibility and adding value over time to the organization, are key to achieving JIT maximum efficiency.

In detail

Multi-skilled workers are employees who master multiple skills and can handle multiple positions, providing organizational flexibility so that production can respond flexibly to demand fluctuations. They are key to achieving Just-in-Time (JIT) production. In the system, multi-skilled workers support standardized work and leveled production, reducing line stoppages due to absenteeism. Unlike single-skilled workers (focused on one skill) and specialists (deep skills), multi-skilled workers emphasize breadth. Their output typically includes cross-training plans, skill matrices, and flexible scheduling.

Example in practice

An automotive parts factory faced order fluctuations, often with some workstations understaffed while others were idle. They implemented a multi-skilled worker program, providing cross-training for employees and establishing a skills matrix. When a workstation was short-staffed, trained employees could quickly fill in, keeping the production line running stably. Additionally, multi-skilled workers participated in improvement activities, offering more suggestions and enhancing overall efficiency.
