Definition

The "Operation Room" mechanism for team, target and visualization information is centralized in one room for coordinated management and rapid decision-making.

In detail

The Obeya system is a "war room" mechanism that centralizes teams, goals, and visual information in one room for collaborative management and rapid decision-making. It addresses the issues of information silos and slow decision-making across departments, promoting face-to-face communication and real-time project tracking through physical space. Unlike the kanban in Daily Management (DM), Obeya is more suitable for project-based or strategic work. It typically outputs a visual war room containing goals, progress, issues, action plans, etc.

Example in practice

In a new product development project, R&D, production, procurement, and sales departments were dispersed across different floors, leading to low communication efficiency and slow problem response. The company established an Obeya room, bringing key personnel from each department together, with project plans, key metrics, and risk lists posted on the walls. Daily stand-up meetings synchronized progress, and issues were coordinated on the spot. Through the Obeya room, project cycle time was shortened, and cross-departmental collaboration improved significantly.
