Definition

Skills and processes required for successful management of the project from start-up to completion of the full life cycle.

In detail

Project management is the skills and processes that ensure project success from initiation to closure. In the DBS context, it is not the full set of generic PMP knowledge areas; the emphasis is on three startup documents — charter, estimate, and risk register — plus the authorization relationships in a matrix organization. Unlike specific tools such as APD, project management answers "how to do it," while tools answer "what to do." Typical outputs are the project charter, estimate, and risk register.

Example in practice

A cross-functional new product introduction project involves multiple teams such as R&D, production, and procurement. The project manager uses project management methods to develop a charter, define SMART goals, break down tasks, and set milestones. Weekly project meetings track progress, identify risks, and adjust plans. The project is completed on time, deliverables meet requirements, and the team accumulates reusable project management experience.
