Definition

Quantitative measurement systems are repetitive, re-recoverable, biased, stable and linear analytical processes.

In detail

Measurement System Analysis is an analytical process that quantifies the repeatability, reproducibility, bias, stability, and linearity of a measurement system. It addresses the issue of unreliable measurement data, ensuring that process improvements are based on accurate data. Unlike process capability analysis, MSA focuses on the measurement system itself, not the process. Its output is typically a measurement system capability report, such as GR&R percentage, and a judgment on acceptability.

Example in practice

When product quality fluctuates with unknown causes, a measurement system analysis can be conducted. For example, if dimensional measurements of a part are unstable, MSA reveals that gauge wear causes bias, and after calibration, measurement data becomes reliable. Subsequent process analysis identifies the true cause, and quality improves after corrective action.
