Creating Impactful Development Plans

Also called: Development plans · IDP · Personal development plans

Definition

An eight-step closed course on one ' s capacity development: quadripartite responsibility, six-column template, operations based on 70/20/10; the writing plan is only five of eight steps, and three of two steps are not productive.

In detail

The Development Plan is an eight-step closed-loop method that systematizes individual capability improvement, emphasizing four-party responsibility (employee, direct manager, next-level manager, HR) and the 70/20/10 ratio — where the next-level manager is responsible for approval and skip-level conversations, the party most easily overlooked yet with the strongest binding force. It solves the training problem of "learn it and forget it" by combining learning with work practice to ensure capabilities truly take hold. Unlike Performance Appraisal, it focuses more on future growth than past performance. Its typical output is a personal development plan document containing specific actions.

Example in practice

A new manager needs to improve leadership, but company training resources are limited. HR guides them to use the development plan tool, first clarifying development goals, then allocating actions per the 70/20/10 model: 70% through cross-functional project experience, 20% through mentoring from senior mentors, and 10% through formal courses. After completion, a personal development plan is formed as a reference for annual performance reviews.
