Career Stallers and Stoppers

← All terms

Also called: Derailers · Derailers

Definition

A list of behavioral characteristics that can stall or derail a person's career development (the original calls it 19 items in one place, while the list actually contains 20 entries), treated as one of the objects to address in a development plan; from an external talent development model (Lominger, Career Stallers and Stoppers).

In detail

Career derailers are behavioral characteristics that can hinder career development, such as lack of integrity or unwillingness to learn. In development plans, they are important inputs for identifying development needs, helping individuals and managers focus on behaviors that need improvement. Unlike competency models, they focus more on negative behaviors rather than positive skills. Typical output is a list of improvement items in a personal development plan.

Example in practice

A technical backbone was given feedback that he was "unwilling to accept new methods", which blocked team innovation. When formulating a development plan, the manager cited the Career Stallers and Stoppers list and pointed out that "blocked personal learning" was the main obstacle. Together they set improvement goals, such as trying one new tool each month, and arranged mentor coaching. After completion, the improvement item was incorporated into the development plan, with regular progress reviews.
